‘Biracial is Bad’: How KRAFT’s MilkBites Campaign Perpetuates Stereotypes & White Supremacy

Article about Kraft’s MilkBites ads and how they mess up the whole biracial issue by anthropomorphizing a self-loathing food product that’s part milk, part granola.

At first I thought the article was silly, then the more videos I watched the more I could see the point. I have no idea why Kraft couldn’t make a happy Mel the Milkbite that embraced its deliciousness. Weird, clueless marketing.

Latino Rebels gives the MilkBites campaign the side eye for using the “tragic mulatto” myth to sell cereal bars.

“This is not to say that I don’t think race should be portrayed in pop culture. I am not of the “colorblind” camp. Of course race is an issue, and it would be ridiculous to pretend that it’s not. But part of the reason race is an issue is because of campaigns like this one, campaigns that perpetuate stereotypes and marginalize people who don’t neatly fit into preconceived categories.

Sociological Images writes:

” The problem with a marketing campaign like this is that it trivializes the experience of people with multiple racial/ethnic identities who are still often met with derision and confusion. The first ad above perpetuates the self-fulfilling prophecy about “confused” identities. As a child, I remember family members telling me that they didn’t have a problem with interracial couples but worried about how others might react to their children.”

At first glance, I really did wonder if this was making a mountain out of a molehill. After reading and watching though, the confused-Hapa-kid in me definitely made a -_______- at some of these. Hmm…

I Am Out of Almond Butter, and Other Life Updates

I like that title much more than I actually have anything to say. But here’s a brief update on the HI Life.

My job continues to be awesome. So are the people I work with.

Beyond the fact that the people I work with are fun, awesome, and super-helpful, I’m just really enjoying the work itself.

Last week felt like my first REAL work week, and while it was crazy-intense (some 12 hour days in there), I LOVED it. It’s everything I’ve been missing in my old job: being really invested in my work, surrounded by other people invested in helping kids, and just generally loving what I do. I had an honest-to-God Wait, am I working right now? This is too fun for work! moment the other day. I know. I am a huge cheeseball, but it’s definitely true. I know the next few weeks are only going to be more intense, but I’m just like

Hanging Upside Down Is the Actual Best.

I tried Aerial Yoga the other night on a whim. I ended up doing it 4 days in a row. I LOVE it. Seriously. I’ve always wanted to try Aerials and Silks (and essentially act as though I am in Cirque de Soleil), and this is a great venue to do this. I’m sure I’ll write some cheesy post on “Changing My Perspective While Hanging Upside Down” or something, and I apologize in advance, but this is just so fun.

I am now intrigued by rural education.

Chris and I have been discussing how we have both been recently intrigued by rural education. He sent me some cool docs on education in Appalachia (where a lot of his context comes from). I’m definitely seeing it from the island perspective here in HI. There’s just a LOT of interesting aspects, facets, and things I hadn’t considered about working in the rural world of education and EdReform. Hmmm…

Teaching Tech is Very Fun

Speaking of education, I have been teaching above-linked Chris, as well as a few people in my office a little about social media. It is super fun. I don’t know why, but something about helping people use this tool to connect and do stuff just feels good. Being at a job and in a place where I finally feel okay social-media-geeking-out (Yammer, anyone?) feels awesome. My boss actually caught me Tweeting at some 2012 CMs under my desk the other day and she goes, “Christina. You’re not in the private world anymore. You can have your phone on your desk.”

I lost my car keys while running and now can’t buy almond butter.

I also can’t go to the store, or run 20 million other errands I wanted to. I also can’t go on school visits this week, which is immensely frustrating since Hawaiian schools get out on Thursday (way early to my Californian self). BOOOOO.

I miss my CA friends. I’m loving HI, but I do have missing-home pangs. Mostly for people. Also for Mexican food. One of my coworkers is going to CA soon though, and I may be able to convince him to bring me back Tamales. Cross you fingers for me, folks.

Anyway, that’s island life. Next few weeks, our 2012 Hawai’i CMs will be joining us! All over-100 of them! This is our largest corps ever, and it’s exciting. Hey, if you think education is cool, and Hawai’i is cool, maybe help us out with a donation?
